Four friends after graduation from college, start their real life in the society. They start looking for a job, but eventually realized that there is a huge gap between reality and the beauty of dreams. Whatever they learned in college, is not practical in society. Reality Bites is about America in 90's, young generation and their struggle to cope with their society.
Academic background is not something useful in the job market, so they have to find a way to handle their basic needs. However all of them are not successful in this way. Understanding ugly truth of daily life is much harder for people with artistic talent. This disconnection with society and lack of understanding from other people, cause a bigger gap between their inner world and out side. In the other hand filling this gap is not that easy, and it requires lots of pain and suffering. The other side of the new life experience for them is about emotional problems.
Reality of society is a chaotic subject and market is not something predictable. Temporary employment is the first sign of moving to a new business model for many big corporations. Fast food industry, expanding rapidly and this is one of the side effects of a modern life style. Employment is not easy in such a situation, specifically for a educated and over qualified person with a artistic point of view.
Psychologically, people with complex behaviors in the society are more vulnerable, and open to damage. In contrast, people with simple personalities, sometimes can find better ways to have a good income. One of the aspects of the movie is showing transit from a artistic and complex jobs to simple temporary jobs in society.
Understanding reality helps to find a good solution, even temporary. Temporary solutions are useful because you can have time to find a better ways to solve the problem.
Life is a complex system, and in the form of disorganized complexity. In this huge system we have many characteristics. Each characteristic can be related to one or more individual subject. These subjects can be define as opportunities. So with a temporary solution we can increase the chance of seeing an opportunity.
From philosophical point of view, Life is crucial, meaningless, and full of suffering. Systematic approach to the Life can be useful in this aspect, too. Instead of looking for meanings we try to survive and having a good time while we are here. Moving forward to be in a better financial situation, is one the good parts of life to forget the hardness of daily life for a short time.
